Step 1: notify family and friends

Family and friends need to be informed of the situation. It is assumed that someone other than the loved one will be making these contacts. They will greatly appreciate you taking the time to keep them informed. They may need time to consider travel if out of state.

Making these calls can be challenging. It is not easy to pass along this news, and people may react in different ways. Take time to prepare. Consider whether you would like to have someone with you when calls are made.  Plan what to say in advance. You can relax knowing that you have a plan for the conversation as details may be tough to share. It also ensures that everyone receives the same important information.

Activity 1
Gather Information

Make a list of people to contact. Contacts-Family and Contacts-Other may contain useful information. If not, use it as a guide. Family can be used as a resource to determine who should be contacted. You may choose to contact family members, friends, and even collegues. Consider which contacts may continue passing information along to others. They can help spread the news.

Disclose details regarding the current health of the loved one.  Family and friends will be anxious to know how their loved one is doing. Discern what details should be disclosed.  Be mindful of disclosing personal information.

Activity 2
Contact Family Members and Friends

Consider the most appropriate way to pass along information. A phone call is the most personal. This is what most people prefer, especially if they are a close family member or friend. Consider whether email is an option. It enables contact to several people simultaneously and ensures that they all receive the same information.
